Himchari
Himchari Beach is nestled at the foothills of the mountains, about 12 kilometers from Cox’s Bazar. Compared to Cox’s Bazar, this beach is relatively quiet and cleaner. Here, you will find a unique blend of mountains, natural waterfalls, a national park, a tourist center, and much more, which set Himchari Beach apart from Cox’s Bazar Beach. On the way from Cox’s Bazar to Himchari, lush green hills line the route, offering breathtaking views of the vast sea from their peaks. The cool, refreshing waterfalls cascading down the hills of Himchari are a major attraction, especially during the monsoon, when they seem to come to life. Alongside the hills, rows of casuarina and coconut trees add to the beauty of the beach.
Himchari also has a small tourist center. Atop the hills, there is a rest house, which can be reached by climbing nearly two hundred steps. Only after making this climb can one enjoy the peaceful retreat of the rest house.
A few words about Himchari National Park |
Himchari National Park was established in 1980, covering an area of 1,729 hectares (17.29 square kilometers) and located 12 kilometers from Cox’s Bazar. The main objectives of establishing the park are research and education, tourism and recreation, and wildlife conservation. One side of Himchari features a vast sea beach, while the other side is adorned with lush green hills. The park is home to several waterfalls, with the Himchari Waterfall being the most famous. It is a popular tourist destination and is known for its evergreen and semi-evergreen tropical forest. The forest contains 117 species of plants, including 58 species of trees, 15 species of shrubs, 4 species of grasses, 19 species of vines, and 21 species of medicinal plants. Himchari Forest is believed to be an important habitat for elephants. Other wildlife in the park includes barking deer, wild boars, and monkeys. Additionally, the forest hosts 55 species of mammals, 286 species of birds, 56 species of reptiles, and 16 species of amphibians. Himchari National Park is also home to the hoolock gibbon. For bird lovers, it is an ideal destination, with notable species among its 286 bird varieties, including the myna, drongo, and palm swift. |
When to go |
---|
Like Cox’s Bazar Beach, Himchari Beach is also a mesmerizing and picturesque destination. Tourists visit this beach daily, drawn by its natural beauty. Waterfalls cascade down the hills, adding to the charm of Himchari and enticing visitors to return again and again. No season—winter, monsoon, spring, or summer—ever leaves this beach deserted. However, during the monsoon, its beauty takes on a unique and breathtaking form. |
Special advice |
Before visiting, be sure to check the weather forecast. Every year, many incidents of drowning occur while swimming in the sea. To stay safe, avoid going too deep—remain as close to the shore as possible and always be cautious. Strong waves can cause loss of balance, putting lives at risk. During the monsoon season, the hills become slippery, so take extra care while climbing or bathing in waterfalls. When purchasing or carrying anything, negotiate the price beforehand. Do not take photos of locals without their permission, and avoid engaging in arguments with them. Help keep the beach clean by disposing of waste properly—do not litter with peels, plastic items, or bottles. If needed, bring a life jacket for safety. If you do not know how to swim, it is best to avoid entering waterfalls or the sea.
