Dumlong Pahar

Dumlong Pahar

Dumlong Pahar is located in Belaichhari Upazila of Rangamati District in southeastern Bangladesh. It is known as “Msha Panji Haphong” or “Rengtlang” by locals. Its height is about 3,314 feet. It is one of the 3 mountains in Bangladesh with a height of more than 1000 meters. It is considered the highest peak in Rangamati district and privately the second highest peak in Bangladesh.

History of Dumlong Pahar

Dumlong is basically a Jhiri or small mountain river, which descends the hills and joins the Raikhan River a few kilometers north. Chura is called “Dumlong” as the source of this trend. It belongs to the Rangtlong mountain range and is located near the Prangjong neighborhood on the banks of the Rangkyeong Lake. At one time it was called as “Rengtlang” as the highest peak of Rengtlang, but locals call this peak as “Dumlong”. This mountain has three peaks. To the north and west of the main peak of the mountain are relatively low peaks.

It is known that “Jatlang or Madak Mual” is the second highest mountain in Bangladesh with a height of 3,315 feet according to GPS reading. But it is disputed in various data. For example- In 2011, Wadud Mohsin Rubel, Asif Aminur Rashid, Nagib Meshkat and Abdul Haque of “Nature Adventure Club”, a private travel organization in Dhaka, visited the Dumlong mountain in Belaichori, Rangamati, Bangladesh using a Germin GPS. After measuring the height of the mountain with the help of Global Positioning System (GPS), it claims to be the second highest mountain in the country.  According to their calculations, the height of the mountain is 3,314 feet.According to their measurements, it is located at 22°02′02.1″ North latitude and 92°35′36.3″ East longitude. The location they recorded exactly matched the location given by Google Earth. So Google Earth also shows it as the second highest peak in the country. A few months after their expedition, a group of “Travellers of Bangladesh” led by Mr. Jakyul Deep calculated this peak as 3,312 feet. Then “BD Explorers” led by Fahim Hassan managed to reach the top of Dumlong as the third team. Although there is little doubt about the height of Dumlong peak, it has not been officially declared as the 2nd or 3rd highest peak in the country. And it is known that a long time ago a fort was built on the rock of Mount Dumlong as the capital of the Dumlong dynasty.

When Will You Go

During the monsoon, nature surrounds itself with its own beauty, but during this time, the mountains and its surroundings are very dangerous. However, if you want to go, during the rainy season, jeeps going to Ruma often go up to Kaikxyangjiri and then you have to travel by engine boat for more than 1 hour to Rumabazar.During this time, you have to walk the entire way from Rumabazar to Dumlong Hill. Mountain travel is safest and most convenient in winter as the roads are unpaved and muddy, making transportation difficult. Beginning of November to March of the following year is considered to be the best time to visit the hills.

Special Advice
Photographs of locals may not be taken without permission. Avoid getting into arguments with locals. It is not proper to throw shells or plastic items and bottles anywhere. Since you have to go for a trek in hilly areas, try to carry small bags and light things as much as possible. Keep enough water, light food and first aid supplies, power bank with you.

  • It is convenient to travel in a group of at least 6 people.
  • Keep a copy of your voter ID or birth certificate.
  • Carry a life jacket if possible.
  • Avoid entering the water if you do not know how to swim.
Special precautions
Traveling on the roof of the jeep is completely prohibited by the Bangladesh Army. There is no electricity facility except solar, so it is very important to carry power bank and torch. Robi and Airtel are suitable as mobile SIM networks here. To avoid untoward risks and to prevent recurrence of past fatal incidents, local administrations have issued warnings and prohibitions against bathing or bathing in various lakes or springs.
