Ramu Rubber Garden
Ramu Rubber Plantation is located just 18 kilometers from Cox’s Bazar city, in the Ramu Upazila. Positioned 3 kilometers north of Ramu Bypass, it extends along both sides of the Dhaka-Cox’s Bazar highway near the Tea Garden Bazaar. The plantation stretches northward from the tea garden area to Malapara in Joarianala, eastward to Jumchhari and Garjania, and southward to Lot Ukhia Ghona. The rubber trees in the plantation have small black and blue plastic containers hanging from them. The white, milky latex drips from the cut sections of the trees into these containers, and the collected latex is then taken to a factory by workers.
In 1960–61, an experimental rubber plantation was first established on 2,682 acres of uncultivated land after conducting a survey and research on a combination of hilly and plain terrain. Currently, latex is collected from approximately 1,130 acres. As of 2019 records, the plantation has around 180,616 trees, of which 58,000 to 65,000 are in the production stage. A rubber tree can produce latex for up to 25 years and loses its economic viability at the age of 32–33 years. The plantation yields about 250,000 kilograms of rubber annually. Besides the Ramu Rubber Plantation, there are seven rubber plantations in Chattogram, four in Sylhet, and five in Madhupur. The plantation is currently operated by an autonomous commercial organization.
Rubber Processing Method | |
During the harvesting season, around 200 regular and irregular workers are engaged in latex collection at the rubber plantation. Every day, approximately 5,000 kilograms of latex is collected from the plantation. After collection, the liquid latex is first brought to a designated area within the plantation, from where it is transported to the factory using latex transportation tanks. At the factory, the latex undergoes coagulation in coagulating tanks. In these tanks, an equal amount of water is added to the latex, along with a specific quantity of liquid formic acid, based on the DRC (Dry Rubber Content) percentage of the latex. A one-inch-thick partition plate is then placed over it, and the mixture is left to settle. Within 10 to 12 hours, the liquid latex solidifies into sheets. The coagulated sheets are then pressed through rolling machines to make them thinner and are left to dry. After approximately seven days of drying, the rubber sheets are transferred to a smokehouse. The rubber is then smoked for 48 hours to complete the processing. This method produces approximately 220 tons of dried rubber annually. |
When to visit
|
---|
During the summer and monsoon seasons, latex production is lower, so visiting the rubber plantation during this time does not offer its true beauty. Since latex production is higher in winter, the best time to visit the Ramu Rubber Plantation is from October to January.

Special advice
|
To maintain the cleanliness of the plantation, littering is not allowed. Visitors should avoid any actions that may cause inconvenience to the plantation workers. Always seek permission before taking someone’s photo. Before dining at any restaurant, carefully check the menu and prices to make an informed decision; otherwise, you might end up overpaying.
|
Special Precautions
|
There are no restrictions on entering the rubber plantation, but permission from the authorities is required to enter the rubber processing factory. If granted permission, visitors should avoid getting too close to the heated furnaces, as they are always burning. Extreme caution must be taken in this regard. While inside the plantation, do not carry any flammable items such as matches, cigarettes, lighters, or similar objects. Due to the dry nature of the environment, there is a risk of accidental fires.
