Patenga Beach, located 14 kilometers south of Zero Point in the port city of Chittagong, lies at the estuary of the Karnaphuli River. The beach is popular for its easy accessibility and architectural beauty. It is situated near the Naval Academy and Shah Amanat International Airport. The beach stretches for 5 kilometers, offering a scenic retreat for visitors.
Key features of Patenga Beach
History of Patenga Beach
The Karnaphuli River, originating from the Lushai Hills of Mizoram, India, flows through Rangamati and Chittagong before merging with the Bay of Bengal near Patenga Beach. Bangladesh’s beaches have long been popular with tourists, but the 1991 cyclone severely damaged Patenga Beach. In the aftermath, concrete walls, large stone blocks, and cement embankments were built along the shore to prevent erosion. These maintenance efforts have enhanced the beauty of the beach, attracting more tourists over time. As the number of visitors grew, several attractions and facilities were developed under the Chittagong City Outer Ring Road project to further enhance the beach’s appeal. These include a walkway, spacious and comfortable seating areas, playgrounds, bathing facilities after swimming in the sea, modern and hygienic toilet facilities, parking spaces, jetties for safe boarding and disembarking from ships, as well as provisions for speed boats, sea bikes, and horse riding.
When Will You Go |
Patenga Beach can be visited year-round. However, during the monsoon season, heavy rainfall may cause the roads to become muddy, and you might face difficulties accessing certain amenities. |
Special Advice |
Be cautious when talking to strangers, as you may fall victim to extortionists or muggers. If you encounter any problems, inform the mobile police unit or the nearest police station. Avoid getting into arguments with locals or shopkeepers. Stay in crowded areas for safety. Whether you’re riding a speedboat, boat, or horse, make sure to clarify the fare beforehand. |
Special Precautions |
To avoid any unpleasant situations while visiting the beach, it’s best to go in groups. Couples planning to visit should carry voter ID cards and necessary identification to avoid potential issues. Since Patenga Beach is located near the Bangladesh Navy’s Naval Academy and Shah Amanat International Airport, security is generally good at night. However, even with the security presence, it can still be risky to wander alone or with a female companion late at night. |
